Sustainability is a term that has been greenwashed, or co-opted to market products and to promote capitalist consumption. Sustainable is not synonymous with “renewable” or “organic.” A coeval conception of sustainability refers to a potentially more narrow set of human activities which can continue in perpetuity without causing damage to the environment, and is not local, national, or even continental in scale. An activity that is sustainable only for some people in some places is not sustainable at all. A coeval conception of sustainability is a planetary, acknowledges that the burden of environmental protection cannot merely be shifted from one space to another through clever economic policies, and recognizes the planet’s inseparable network of connections.
